About the wood we use.
The wood we use is often sourced locally from trees which would otherwise go to waste. Our exotic wood supplier is a local small business and the types of wood we purchase are not listed on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora the endangered species list.
Why wood and not steel blades?
Wood is biodegradable, recyclable and has a lower overall energy usage to produce.
Our wooden blades will cut food but not skin. If dropped they are much less likely to damage your tiles or kitchen floor surface.
Our wooden bladed knives won't mark your lovely boards in the way that steel knives do.
There are so many variations in the woods we use that the colour and textural visual effects which can be achieved are aesthetically pleasing when used.

What will wooden blades cut?
The majority of our range of knives are branded as 'cheese' knives. The way our wooden blades are carefully designed and made ensures that the edge of the blade will easily cut most cheeses.
However, they will also cut through most vegetable, cured meats and fruits.
As an experiment one day we used one of our knives to prepare and eat a 'meat and three veg' meal. It did a superb job!

Will they stay sharp?
We started making wooden bladed knives in 2017. Since then our cutlery drawer at home has grown to incorporate some of our favourites and those which didn't quite pass our stringent quality control measures. We have used them well and they all remain sharp enough to still be used on our cheese platters.
However, when the blade becomes a little dull, all that is needed is a light sanding along both sides of the blade, keeping the original angle made during manufacturing to ensure that the knife remains as versatile as it was.

How do you look after them?
Wood is a natural product and will require maintenance to keep it's original quality. Simply wipe over with a warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly before storing. Do not put your Whispers of Wood knives into the dishwasher!
If the wood becomes a little furry, as can be the case when not dried before storing or if used with wetter food stuffs - simply take a light grade sandpaper and give the furry bits a light sanding. Use an oil from your kitchen or a food safe beeswax to bring back the shine and colour in the wood.
